Tony Hawk Foundation

Stand Up for Skateparks

The Tony Hawk Foundation (THF) is the only national organization focused solely on empowering at-risk youth and assisting challenged communities across the United States through the development and financing of free, public skateboard parks. Since its inception in 2002, the Tony Hawk Foundation has helped fund over 500 public skateparks in all 50 states.

Tony's choice to dedicate his Foundation to the work of helping communities develop free, quality public skateparks stems from his own experience as a young skater. Growing up in San Diego, Tony lived near one of the few remaining skateparks in the early 1980s. Spending every afternoon there, the skatepark became his home away from home, and the camaraderie and community he experienced there supported him and helped him develop the skills that made him a skateboarding champion.

Skateboarding is an athletic passion that offers lessons in perseverance, discipline, leadership, and individuality. THF staff work directly with communities across the country to advocate for healthy, safe recreational facilities for at-risk youth to practice this board sport. Groups pursuing a public skatepark are charged with the task of educating their communities, building grassroots support and momentum for the project, and developing the necessary fundraising campaign to complete their parks.

The majority of these efforts are initiated and advanced through the direct effort and leadership of local youth. As a condition of receiving a Tony Hawk Foundation grant, groups must demonstrate the need for a skatepark to their city leaders and local donors. Guiding them through the process and empowering them to effectively articulate their community’s need for a safe, sanctioned place for this board sport is key to making their dream of a local skatepark a reality. For many at-risk youth, this is their first step toward leadership, self-advocacy and character development.

The Tony Hawk Foundation was established by a gift from Tony Hawk. Its directors raise additional funds through events, donations, and continuing contributions from Tony and other entities. In addition to skateparks, the Foundation also makes donations to other children-related charities, as chosen by its Board Of Directors. The afternoon carnival-style events showcase the world’s best skateboarders and BMX riders on Tony Hawk’s vert ramp, feature a live musical performance, activities for parents and kids, great food and drinks, live and silent auctions, and incredible giveaways for all.

Funds raised from Stand Up for Skateparks go directly to help improve the lives of at-risk youth through the creation high-quality public skateparks in low-income communities across the U.S. For more information about Stand Up For Skateparks, check out www.standupforskateparks.org, call Lily Schwimmer at 760-477-2479
